Have you always dreamed of taking off into the wild blue yonder, but just never got around to it? Anyone living in or near Huntsville now has the opportunity to get their private pilot’s license thanks to the instructors at the Redstone Arsenal Flying Club, a facility recognized as being one of the best of its type in the world. Believe it or not the training facility here has been in operation since 2007, but is only now starting to get the recognition it deserves.
The Redstone Arsenal Flying Club:
The first thing you need to know about the Redstone Arsenal Flying Club is because it’s located on a military base you’ll need a base access card to visit it. Once you’ve gained access you get to learn from world-class instructors, with a fleet of 12 professionally-maintained aircraft. The fleet includes a Cessna 182, 2 Piper Arrows, 5 Cessna 172s, and a trio of Cessna 152s, so there’s an aircraft to suit every beginner or improver pilot. Taking off and landing here is a straightforward affair thanks to the 7,200 foot runway, and a control tower which is manned during the day.
Training & Tuition:
How much training does it take for you to get your private pilot’s license? You’re looking at investing in a minimum of 40 hours of training before you can fly solo, although the instructors here do recommend that you consider having at least 55-hours of tuition if you want to come out top of your class.
You won’t need to take out a second mortgage on your home to learn how to fly, because the tuition starts at a very reasonable $30 per hour for Private Pilot training. Instrument Pilot training starts at $32 per hour, but if you’re interested in Commercial Pilot training that costs $34 per hour. So, in total, you’re looking at investing around $1,500 in your tuition fees to gain your private pilot’s license, which is less than the cost of a reasonable secondhand car.
Taking Off At the Right Place:
Another perk of gaining your pilot’s license at Redstone Arsenal Flying Club is that the runway isn’t heavily trafficked, so you get to learn in a relaxed environment, free from the stress of trying to navigate congested runways, and even more congested skies.
Imagine being able to see the world from a pilot’s perspective, soaring above the clouds, feeling the freedom that only flight can bring? Or do you have a significant other who’s always talking about getting their pilot’s license, but never doing anything about it? Well why not give them the gift of flight by booking them some lessons?
The Redstone Arsenal Flying Club is open from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 4pm, but is closed all day Saturday and Sunday. That being said you do get 24/7 access to the facility once you’ve successfully completed your pilot training.
Regardless of why you decide to learn how to fly at the Redstone Arsenal Flying Club, you will complete your training with all the knowledge and skill you need to be a safe, proficient and confident pilot. Plus, you now have the bragging rights of being a trained pilot - not something everyone achieves in their lifetime.
